For most of the Keweenaw's history it was the mine companies that owned great swaths of land up and down the peninsula. As the copper empire came to a close and companies sold off their assets, a great deal of this land was sold to land companies and managed as commercial forests. Since then those vast holding have been transferred again, this time to local land conservation groups who have acquired ownership of large parcels of land scattered about the Copper Country. These groups have been generous enough of open their land to the public for non-motorized use. To help navigate the numerous trails found throughout these public accessible lands we have put together a series of trail maps.
