For the past six weeks, Industrial Archaeologists from Michigan Technological University have been carefully excavating the Cliff Mine Stamp Mill (both the Stamp Room and the Wash House) built and run from 1850-1869 (approx). A student research team will be showing off the results of their excavation this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, June 25-26, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
NOTE: This is a mine site and is primitive! There are no toilets or drinking water and the event is weather depending. There may be mud, puddles, mosquitos, sun, heat, cold, loose rock and poor trails. There is a hike involved with the tour.
To protect the mill site from decay and damage, the excavation will be filled after the project concludes. This is the time to see the stamp mill if you’d like to see it!
Cliff Mine is located on Cliff Drive just south of Phoenix, MI.
