This thirteen acre lake sits far off the beaten path west of Gay and forms the headwaters of the Tobacco River. The lake is relatively shallow, with an average depth is only 4 ft . Its shore is predominantly dominated by marsh and a great deal of weeds can be found in the lakes more shallow areas. Access is provided by a small primitive boat launch on the lakes southern shore. Fishing from shore is possible here, or from along an old logging road which runs along the lake’s eastern shore, especially at a short timber bridge crossing the Tobacco River outlet. Home to Smallmouth Bass and Perch.
NOTES: Although there is a public boat launch on the lake, reaching it requires traversing more then a mile along a rugged dirt road – which may be difficult for low-clearance vehicles. The launch site is very primitive, with no dock or ramp and only a very small parking area for a trailer. The lands surrounding the lake are DNR owned land and are open to the public.
DIRECTIONS: From along US41 in Mohawk turn onto Fulton Street and follow it east out of town for 6 miles. Turn left onto a dirt road marked by a sign for Thayer’s Lake. Follow this road for just over mile and make a left at the fork. This road will lead to the boat launch. By going straight instead you’ll soon arrive to the bridge over the Tobacco River.
