On Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 2:00pm, there will be a presentation about the Underwater Archaeology Survey. This free public presentation will take place at the Township Hall in Eagle River, Michigan.
On June 23rd-24th, a team of Maritime Archaeologists will undertake a survey of the waters off Eagle River as part of the 2011 Cliff Mine Archaeology Project (weather permitting!). They will use a state-of-the-art Kongsberg-Mesotech MS 1000 Sector Scanning Sonar and try to locate, identify, and map any remains of the community’s famous 300’ dock, where copper was loaded for shipping and passengers arrived and departed the area. Will they find the dock? What about the cranes that did the loading? Were there other clues about life at this place where land and lake meet for travel, shipping, and supply? Come hear what the underwater research team discovered!
Speakers:
Mark Holley, Maritime Archaeologist for Tribal Marine Services and the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve; Professor, Northwest Michigan College
Brian Abbott, Commercial Diver and President of Nautilus Marine Group International
Kenneth Vrana, Director of Michigan Tech’s Isle Royale Institute
The Cliff Mine Research Team thanks the Keweenaw County Historical Society for hosting this presentation.
The Cliff Mine Archaeology Project 2011 field season has been sponsored by grants from the Keweenaw National Historic Park Advisory Commission and the Department of Social Sciences at Michigan Technological University, along with generous gifts of support from Joseph Dancy and Paul LaVanway. Information about the project can be found on their website.
The underwater survey has been supported by the Isle Royale Institute and Department of Social Sciences at Michigan Technological University. Both IRI and the Industrial Archaeology team thank Nautilus Marine Group and Tribal Marine Services for their donation of time and expertise to the Cliff Mine Archaeology Project.

We have received word from a reliable source that the pond at Garden City Pond is no more. This spring, the dam became blocked with debris and the water built up behind it. Eventually the water rose around the banks of the dam to escape and the pond is no more.
We are planning a visit soon to check out the damage and decide whether Garden City Pond should remain on Keweenaw Free Guide or whether it just needs updated information.
